The Dwarka–Somnath yatra in Gujarat brings together two of the most sacred sites in Hinduism: Somnath, the first of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, and Dwarka, the legendary kingdom of Lord Krishna and one of the Char Dham. This guide covers the key temples, the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga nearby, a suggested route, the best time to go, and how to reach.
The Somnath temple, rebuilt many times through history, stands majestically on the Arabian Sea coast and is revered as the first among the twelve Jyotirlingas. The sunset aarti and the evening sound-and-light show narrating the temple's history are deeply moving. The shrine's seaside setting adds to its timeless spiritual atmosphere.
Dwarka, one of the four sacred Char Dham, is home to the Dwarkadhish temple dedicated to Lord Krishna as the king of Dwarka. A short drive and a boat ride away lies Bet Dwarka, believed to be Krishna's residence, along with the Gomti Ghat and the Rukmini Devi temple nearby.
Between Dwarka and Bet Dwarka stands the Nageshwar temple, another of the twelve Jyotirlingas, marked by a towering statue of Lord Shiva. Combining Somnath and Nageshwar means this single yatra lets you offer darshan at two Jyotirlingas.
A relaxed trip covers the circuit in about 4 to 5 days. A common route is Somnath → Dwarka (via Porbandar, Mahatma Gandhi's birthplace), covering Somnath, then Nageshwar, Dwarkadhish and Bet Dwarka. The roads along the Saurashtra coast are good and scenic.
The cooler months from October to March are the most pleasant for this coastal yatra. Festivals such as Janmashtami at Dwarka and Mahashivratri at Somnath are spectacular but very crowded, so plan accordingly.
The nearest airports are Rajkot, Jamnagar and Porbandar, with Dwarka and Somnath both connected by rail and road. Many pilgrims fly or take a train to Rajkot or Jamnagar and then travel the coastal circuit by road.
A planned package with comfortable stays and a good driver makes the Saurashtra circuit effortless, covering two Jyotirlingas and the Krishna dham in one smooth trip.
