Badrinath opening date 2027 (expected)

Based on the pattern of recent years, the Badrinath temple opening date in 2027 is most likely to fall in late April or the first week of May 2027. The official date is never fixed in advance — it is decided fresh each year through tradition and astrology, and announced only on Vasant Panchami. Until that announcement (around February 2027), any ‘2027 date’ you see online is an estimate, including ours.

For reference, Badrinath opened on 23 April 2026 and on 4 May 2025 — so a late-April-to-early-May opening for 2027 is a reasonable expectation to plan around.

How the Badrinath opening date is decided

Unlike Kedarnath (whose date is declared on Maha Shivratri), the Badrinath kapat opening date is fixed on Vasant Panchami at a religious ceremony held at Narendra Nagar, near Rishikesh. The date and auspicious time (muhurat) are calculated by royal priests on the basis of the erstwhile Tehri royal family’s traditions and astrology, and then formally announced by the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee. About two weeks before the portals open, the Gadu Ghada (oil pot) yatra carries sacred sesame oil to the temple for the first abhishek.

Badrinath closing date 2027 (expected)

The Badrinath portals close for the winter after Diwali, when the region becomes heavily snowbound. The 2027 closing date is expected around early November 2027 and is announced on Vijayadashami (Dussehra). After closing, the deity’s winter worship shifts to Pandukeshwar and Joshimath. Plan your darshan well before the closing week, as the final days see very heavy crowds.

  • 2025: 4 May 2025
  • 2023: 27 April 2023

Badrinath registration 2027

Like all four Char Dham shrines, visiting Badrinath requires mandatory Uttarakhand Char Dham yatra registration. Registration is done online on the Uttarakhand government’s tourist-care portal (and via its app), or offline at designated counters in Haridwar and Rishikesh. You will need a photo ID and basic travel details for each pilgrim. Registration usually opens a few weeks before the yatra season begins — see our Char Dham registration guide for the step-by-step process.

How to reach Badrinath

Badrinath sits at about 3,300 m in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, and is the only Char Dham shrine reachable almost entirely by road. The usual base is Haridwar or Rishikesh, from where it is roughly a 10–11 hour drive via Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Joshimath. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant (Dehradun) and the nearest major railhead is Haridwar. Helicopter options to the Char Dham region are also available in season.
