Gangotri & Yamunotri Opening Date 2027: Akshaya Tritiya Kapat Schedule

Home / Blog / Post

Planning the Char Dham Yatra in 2027? Two of the four dhams — Gangotri and Yamunotri — always open their portals (kapat) on Akshaya Tritiya, which marks the start of the Char Dham Yatra each year. For 2027, Akshaya Tritiya falls on Sunday, 9 May 2027, so both shrines are expected to open on that day. The official date is confirmed by the temple committee closer to the season, usually around Basant Panchami (February 2027).

Note: 9 May 2027 is the expected opening based on the Akshaya Tritiya tithi. The exact, official muhurat for each shrine is announced by the Uttarakhand Char Dham Devasthanam Board and the respective temple priests before the season — this guide will be updated when the 2027 dates are formally declared.

When will Gangotri open in 2027?

Gangotri Dham, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, is expected to open on Sunday, 9 May 2027, on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. The opening muhurat is traditionally decided at Mukhba (the winter seat of Goddess Ganga) on Akshaya Tritiya morning, and the deity is brought in a ceremonial procession to the Gangotri temple where the portals are opened with full Vedic rituals.

For reference, in 2026 Gangotri opened in late April, and in 2025 the portals opened on 30 April. Because the date is tied to the lunar Akshaya Tritiya tithi, it shifts every year — which is why it moves to 9 May in 2027.

When will Yamunotri open in 2027?

Yamunotri Dham, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, also opens on Akshaya Tritiya, Sunday 9 May 2027. The opening muhurat is announced from Kharsali (Yamuna’s winter abode), and the Doli (palanquin) of Maa Yamuna is carried to the temple for the kapat-opening ceremony. Yamunotri requires a roughly 5–6 km trek from Janki Chatti, so most pilgrims pair it with Gangotri at the start of the yatra circuit.

How are the Gangotri & Yamunotri 2027 dates decided?

Unlike Kedarnath (announced on Maha Shivratri) and Badrinath (announced on Basant Panchami), the Gangotri and Yamunotri opening dates are fixed to Akshaya Tritiya every year — so you can plan well in advance. The closing dates are tied to the autumn festivals: Yamunotri closes on Bhai Dooj and Gangotri closes on Annakut (Govardhan Puja), both in late October or early November.

Once all four dates are official, see our full Char Dham Yatra 2027 opening dates guide for Kedarnath and Badrinath too, and the Kedarnath opening date 2027 schedule.

Char Dham registration 2027

Registration is mandatory for every pilgrim before visiting Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath or Badrinath. It is done free of cost on the official Uttarakhand portal (registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in) or the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app, and registration usually opens a few weeks before the yatra begins. Read our step-by-step Char Dham Yatra registration guide to be ready the day it opens.

How to reach Gangotri & Yamunotri

  • By air: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (~210–230 km) is the nearest airport; taxis and buses run onward to Uttarkashi.
  • By rail: Rishikesh and Haridwar are the nearest railheads, well connected to Delhi.
  • By road: Both dhams are reached via Uttarkashi. Gangotri is motorable up to the temple; Yamunotri needs a 5–6 km trek (ponies and palkis available) from Janki Chatti.

Best way to plan the 2027 yatra

The classic Char Dham circuit covers Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath. Starting right after the 9 May opening means fewer crowds than the peak May–June rush, but roads can still be busy. A guided package handles permits, registration, hotels and transport so you only focus on darshan. Explore our Char Dham Yatra (Ex Delhi) package and Char Dham Yatra (Ex Haridwar) package, or build a shorter Kedarnath & Badrinath (Do Dham) yatra.
