Planning a visit to the world’s highest Gurudwara in 2027? Hemkund Sahib — the revered Sikh shrine at about 15,200 ft in Chamoli, Uttarakhand — opens for only a few months each year because of heavy Himalayan snow. For 2027, the portals (kapat) are expected to open in late May 2027, around the same window as 2026, when Hemkund Sahib opened on 23 May 2026. The exact 2027 date is announced by the Hemkund Sahib Management Trust a few weeks before the season.
| Detail | 2027 (expected) |
|---|---|
| Opening (kapat) | Late May 2027 (2026 opened 23 May) |
| Closing (kapat) | Early–mid October 2027 (2026 closed ~10 Oct) |
| Altitude | ~15,200 ft (4,632 m) — world’s highest Gurudwara |
| Location | Chamoli district, Uttarakhand |
| Announced by | Hemkund Sahib Management Trust / Uttarakhand Govt |
Note: Late May 2027 is the expected opening based on recent years. The official 2027 kapat date is confirmed by the Gurudwara Management Trust closer to the season, and can shift by a few days depending on snow clearance on the trek route — this guide will be updated when the date is declared.
Hemkund Sahib is expected to open in the last week of May 2027. The opening depends heavily on snow conditions on the high-altitude trek, so the Hemkund Sahib Management Trust and the Uttarakhand government announce the confirmed date only a few weeks in advance, usually in April–May. For reference, the shrine opened on 23 May 2026 and in the third/fourth week of May in recent years. The Indian Army (ITBP/engineers) clears the snow on the final stretch and performs the opening Ardas.
The shrine closes for winter in early to mid October 2027 (in 2026 the yatra concluded around 10 October). After closing, the entire region is cut off by snow until the next season. So the practical window to visit Hemkund Sahib in 2027 will be roughly late May to early October 2027, with the best weather in June and September.
Like the Char Dham, Uttarakhand yatra registration is required — done free on the official Uttarakhand portal (registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in) or the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app. Carry a valid photo ID and warm layers (temperatures near the lake stay cold even in June). See our Uttarakhand yatra registration guide for the step-by-step process.
Because Govindghat lies on the Badrinath highway, Hemkund Sahib pairs naturally with a Kedarnath & Badrinath (Do Dham) yatra or the full Char Dham Yatra (Ex Delhi). If you are planning the whole 2027 season, also check the Char Dham Yatra 2027 opening dates and the Gangotri & Yamunotri opening date 2027 to line up your trip.
Hemkund Sahib is expected to open in late May 2027 (in 2026 it opened on 23 May). The official date is announced by the Hemkund Sahib Management Trust a few weeks before the season, as it depends on snow clearance.
Hemkund Sahib 2027 mein May ke aakhri hafte mein khulne ki ummeed hai (2026 mein 23 May ko khula tha). Barf ke hisaab se official date season se kuch hafte pehle announce hoti hai.
It is expected to close in early to mid October 2027 (around 10 October, as in 2026), after which the route is snowbound until the next season.
The final 6 km from Ghangaria to Hemkund is a steep, high-altitude climb. It is manageable for reasonably fit pilgrims who start early and acclimatise; ponies and porters are available, and a helicopter runs up to Ghangaria.
Yes. Uttarakhand yatra registration is required and free — register on the official state portal or the Tourist Care app before you travel.
